Adherents.com reports that there are 4,200 religions in the world, 22 of which are considered to be “major world religions.” Imagine if it were illegal to criticize one of them. Imagine if that religion claimed 1.5 billion members and included a mandatory, oppressive political system along with the duty to wage continual war against those who will not submit to it.
One does not have to imagine this if one lives in The Netherlands. Geert Wilders, a Dutch MP on trial for criticizing Islam, warns that “All over Europe, the lights are slowly going out” because “the ruling elites are defending an ideology that, for 14 centuries, has been trying to destroy us.” Clearly, given the circumstances of this case, the light he is referring to is the illumination of the mind through mankind’s coming to the knowledge of truth through the use of reason.
In layman’s terms, we might ask, is Europe losing its collective mind?
