CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The Mountain Party candidate for U.S. Senate said his positions set him apart from opponents Joe Manchin and John Raese, who he said are almost indistinguishable from one another on the most important issues.
Jesse Johnson also emphasized during an interview that he is not a Sept. 11, 2001 conspiracy theorist.
Johnson, 51, took issue with a seven-paragraph report by The Associated Press this week that claims he “questions whether the Sept. 11 attacks were masterminded by Osama bin Laden and carried out by al Qaida terrorists,” and believes 9/11 “has never been investigated.”
“There are no quotation marks in the entire article,” he said.
Johnson said he does not believe attacks were carried out by the U.S. government, as many conspiracy theorists believe. He said his comments merely were intended to point out that some questions remain unanswered regarding the attacks.
But he said the 9/11 Commission Report should be viewed with some skepticism.
“The two chairs of the commission say clearly that they were obstructed, that there is more to be learned . . . and much more damning things than I am saying right now,” Johnson said.
“If the people who were involved in the commission report don’t stand by it, then why is the public?”
