A signature update automatically deployed by the AVG virus scanner yesterday (Thursday) has crippled numerous computers.
Users who installed virus DB update 3292 and restarted their systems as requested may no longer be able to use their computers, as they may be caught in a loop that first produces a blue screen (STOP: c0000135) and then performs another reboot.
AVG have apparently provided a flawed update file. According to user reports, both the free and the commercial version of the virus scanner are affected. AVG has since replaced the update with the safe previous version.
Those who have installed the update, but have not yet performed the required system restart can avoid the blue screen loop by deleting the avgrs[x|a].exe and avgchsv[x|a].exe files.
