Blanco, Nagin, and Save Our Wetlands: the real destroyers of New Orleans

Real Lessons of Katrina: Progress Blocked by Environmental Extremists

Five years after the devastation of New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina, few know the real lessons that should be learned. No it’s not the often-told story about how President Bush neglected the situation and let the city go underwater. That another Big Lie invented by liberal Democrats to bash Republicans politically and sell the voters on electing pabulum puking liberal politicians that have no real agenda. In fact, President Bush was pro-active and offered to send in National Guard troops immediately. Liberal Democrat Lousiana Governor Kathleen Blanco denied the National Guard troops offer while liberal Democrat New Orleans mayor Ray Nagin sent citizens to the Superdome as he let hundreds of buses (that could have evacuated those citizens) get drowned in flood waters. The real truth is of Democrat politicians from New Orleans and Louisiana who were truly guilty of inaction and incompetent response. That’s not a partisan statement but an accurate one; Blanco and Nagin were totally inept. But even THAT still is not the REAL lesson to be learned from Katrina.

It needs to be remembered that many parts of the city of New Orleans are at or below sea level. That is why the system of levees was built to protect the city should a storm or hurricanes cause temporary rises in sea levels. In the 1970s a local environmental group called Save Our Wetlands filed suit in federal court to stop construction projects designed to bolster and improve the levee system. In 1977, the court ruled in their favor and shut down the levee improvement projects. That very lawsuit and the failure to complete the levee improvement construction since then lead directly to the devastation of the city in 2005 by Katrina. Despite that legacy, Save Our Wetlands continues to deny responsibility while continuing to promote its backward extremist environmental agenda.
