Eerie footage shows brand new African city built by China lying empty

Vicky Davis sent this link about an empty city in Africa built by China. Check out the related link at the end of the post showing other empty cities built by China. What the heck is going on?

Why has China built a ghost town in Africa?

Eerie footage shows brand new Angolan city designed for 500,000 lying empty

  • Nova Cidade de Kilamba has 750 eight-storey blocks of apartments
  • But it has no residents, and the £75,000 cost is too much for slum-dwellers
  • Fears the £2.2billion project, built in three years, could lay empty for years
  • Just a fraction of the billions China has poured into Africa in recent years
By Daily Mail Reporter

It was supposed to be a state-of-the-art city for 500,000 - but eerie footage shows how a Chinese-built urbanisation is at risk of becoming Africa's first 'ghost town'.

Constructed on the outskirts of Angola's capital city Luanda, Nova Cidade de Kilamba has 750 eight-storey blocks of flats, a dozen schools and more than 100 shop units.

But, crucially, it has no residents, and many of the nearby slum-dwellers cannot afford the £75,000 price-tag to move in.

This has sparked fears the £2.2billion project, a fraction of the cash China has poured into Africa in recent years, could lay abandoned for years to come.

It has also highlighted the increasing 'colonisation' of Africa by China, seen to be wanting the resource-rich continent as a 'satellite state', in recent years.

It is said to be reminiscent of the West's imperial push in the 18th and 19th centuries, with critics pointing to trade deals with more than 40 countries.

They also flag up the provision of billions each year in loans to states on the continent, which extends China's political as well as its economic influence.

It is seeing local black workers either paid a pittance or pushed out completely in favour of Chinese labourers. And African shops are now flooded with cheap Chinese products.

Sebastiao Antonio, 17, who travels on a bus from an outlying area for three hours a day to get to one of the opened schools, told the BBC: 'I really like this place.

WHY IS CHINA BUYING UP AFRICA?

Chinese influence has grown massively in recent years across Africa, fuelled by natural resources such as oil, iron and copper.

These are shipped to China and then end up back in Africa in the form of vehicles or footwear.

Trade between Beijing and Africa was worth £70billion by the turn of this decade. It was worth £4billion ten years before.

Trade deals with more than 40 countries have been signed, including Uganda, Kenya and Algeria.

The communists also provide billions each year in loans to states on the continent, extending their political as well as economic influence.

It is estimated that more than a million Chinese have moved to Africa since trade started booming.

It led British Prime Minister David Cameron to criticise the 'authoritation capitalism' of China last year, by saying it was unsustainable in the long term.

In comments about China’s growing global influence, he admitted the West was increasingly alarmed by Beijing’s leading role in the new ‘scramble for Africa’.

He said he was keen to counter the ‘Chinese invasion’ of Africa and urged the continent to introduce democratic reforms.

He also said Britain needed to forge a new relationship with the continent now that the 'shadow 'of colonialism had been lifted.

'It's got car parking, places for us to have games like football, basketball and handball. It's very quiet, much calmer than the other city, there's no criminality.'

But when asked if his family would move there, he said: 'No way, we can't afford this. It's impossible. And there is no work for my parents here.'

Kilamba street sweeper Jack Franciso, 32, added: 'Yes, it's a nice place for sure but to live here you need a lot of money. People like us don't have money like that.'

He has a point. How can someone who earns an average £1.30 per day afford luxury flats that range from £75,000 to £130,000.

It seems it's a question state-owned China International Trust and Investment Corporation, which built the 12,355 acres development in three years in exchange for oil, has not asked.

And it now means the city is at risk of turning into the European ghost towns seen across Ireland and Spain.

Built during the property boom, they were meant for people who never move in - leaving those who did with a worthless property they cannot sell.

Kilamba is the largest of several 'satellite cities' being built by Chinese firms in Angola, and believed to be one of the biggest new-build projects in Africa.

Real estate adverts show its citizens enjoying a stylish lifestyle away from the dust of the capital's slums. But the promotional material is misleading, as almost 12 months since the first batch of 2,800 flats went on sale, only 220 have been sold.

Hardly anyone has moved in, there are few shops and the only place to buy food is a supermarket at one entrance. A handful of Chinese labourers, who live in containers next to the site, seem to be the only people walking the deserted streets.

But despite the perception that flat prices were too high, real estate agency Delta Imobiliaria, in charge of selling the flats, said the real problem was in accessing bank credit.

Chaos: Ireland also has its fair share of ghost estates, this one featuring beautiful thatched cottages

Paulo Cascao, general manager, told the BBC: 'The prices are correct for the quality of the apartments and for all the conditions that the city can offer.

'The sales are going slowly due to the difficulty in obtaining mortgages.' He also revealed a section of the flats would be designated social housing, for people on low incomes to pay rent at low prices.

This is seen as a response to critics who say the government needs to focus on building low-cost housing for the 'majority of the population' who live in shacks with no water, electricity or sanitation.

China's push into Africa is 'reminiscent of the West in the 18th and 19th centuries'

Kilamba, the vacant satellite city for 500,000 on the outskirts of Angola's capital Luanda, is just one of many China is building across the country - and across the entire continent.

Over the last decade, China has pumped billions of pounds into Africa, and is showing no signs of slowing down.ANDREW MALONE writes why this means the West should be VERY worried.

Risky: Locals dig through mountains of mining waste looking for scraps of metal ore in The Congo

Risky: Locals dig through mountains of mining waste looking for scraps of metal ore in The Congo

China's push into Africa is said to be reminiscent of the West's imperial move in the 18th and 19th centuries - but on a much more dramatic, determined scale.

China's rulers believe Africa can become a 'satellite' state, solving its own problems of over-population and shortage of natural resources at a stroke.

With little fanfare, a staggering 750,000 Chinese have settled in Africa over the past decade. And more are believed to be on their way.

The strategy has been carefully devised by officials in Beijing, where one expert has estimated that China will eventually need to send 300million people to Africa to solve the problems of over-population and pollution.

The plans appear on track. Across Africa, the red flag of China is flying. Lucrative deals are being struck to buy its commodities - oil, platinum, gold and minerals.

New embassies and air routes are opening up. The continent's new Chinese elite can be seen everywhere, shopping at their own expensive boutiques, driving Mercedes and BMW limousines, sending their children to exclusive private schools.

The pot-holed roads are cluttered with Chinese buses, taking people to markets filled with cheap Chinese goods. More than a thousand miles of new Chinese railroads are crisscrossing the continent, carrying billions of tons of illegally-logged timber, diamonds and gold.

The trains are linked to ports dotted around the coast, waiting to carry the goods back to Beijing after unloading cargoes of cheap toys made in China.

Confucius Institutes (state-funded Chinese 'cultural centres') have sprung up throughout Africa, as far afield as the tiny land-locked countries of Burundi and Rwanda, teaching baffled local people how to do business in Mandarin and Cantonese.

Massive dams are being built, flooding nature reserves. The land is scarred with giant Chinese mines, with 'slave' labourers paid less than £1 a day to extract ore and minerals.

Pristine forests are being destroyed, with China taking up to 70 per cent of all timber from Africa. All over this great continent, the Chinese presence is swelling into a flood. Angola has its own 'Chinatown', as do great African cities such as Dar es Salaam and Nairobi.

Exclusive, gated compounds, serving only Chinese food, and where no blacks are allowed, are being built all over the continent. 'African cloths' sold in markets on the continent are now almost always imported, bearing the legend: 'Made in China'.

Never far away: The influence of the Chinese is always close at hand in Africa

Never far away: The influence of the Chinese is always close at hand in Africa

From Nigeria in the north, to Equatorial Guinea, Gabon and Angola in the west, across Chad and Sudan in the east, and south through Zambia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique, China has seized a vice-like grip on a continent which officials have decided is crucial to the superpower's long-term survival.

'The Chinese are all over the place,' says Trevor Ncube, a prominent African businessman with publishing interests around the continent. 'If the British were our masters yesterday, the Chinese have taken their place.'

Likened to one race deciding to adopt a new home on another planet, Beijing has launched its so-called 'One China In Africa' policy because of crippling pressure on its own natural resources in a country where the population has almost trebled from 500 million to 1.3 billion in 50 years.

China is hungry - for land, food and energy. While accounting for a fifth of the world's population, its oil consumption has risen 35-fold in the past decade and Africa is now providing a third of it; imports of steel, copper and aluminium have also shot up, with Beijing devouring 80 per cent of world supplies.

On the job: Chinese building workers in Zambia

On the job: A Chinese building worker in Zambia

Fuelling its own boom at home, China is also desperate for new markets to sell goods. And Africa, with non-existent health and safety rules to protect against shoddy and dangerous goods, is the perfect destination.

The result of China's demand for raw materials and its sales of products to Africa is that turnover in trade between Africa and China has risen expoentially.

However, there is a lethal price to pay. There is a sinister aspect to this invasion. Chinese-made war planes roar through the African sky, bombing opponents.

Chinese-made assault rifles and grenades are being used to fuel countless murderous civil wars, often over the materials the Chinese are desperate to buy.

After battling for years against the white colonial powers of Britain, France, Belgium and Germany, post-independence African leaders are happy to do business with China for a straightforward reason: cash.

With western loans linked to an insistence on democratic reforms and the need for 'transparency' in using the money (diplomatic language for rules to ensure dictators do not pocket millions), the

Chinese have proved much more relaxed about what their billions are used for.Certainly, little of it reaches the continent's impoverished 800 million people. Much of it goes straight into the pockets of dictators. In Africa, corruption is a multi-billion pound industry and many experts believe that China is fuelling the cancer.

The Chinese are contemptuous of such criticism. To them, Africa is about pragmatism, not human rights. While the bounty has, not surprisingly, been welcomed by African dictators, the people of Africa are less impressed.

There have also been riots in Zambia, Angola and Congo over the flood of Chinese immigrant workers. The Chinese do not use African labour where possible, saying black Africans are lazy and unskilled.

In Angola, the government has agreed that 70 per cent of tendered public works must go to Chinese firms, most of which do not employ Angolans. As well as enticing hundreds of thousands to settle in Africa, they have even shipped Chinese prisoners to produce the goods cheaply.

Where will it all end? As far as Beijing is concerned, it will stop only when Africa no longer has any minerals or oil to be extracted from the continent.

The people of this bewitching, beautiful continent, where humankind first emerged from the Great Rift Valley, desperately need progress. The Chinese are not here for that.

They are here for plunder. After centuries of pain and war, Africa deserves better.

House holds Holder in contempt as he does Disney World

The invisible men, Boehner and McConnell, finally stand up to one of the multitude of criminal acts engaged in by the Obama reign.

Holder seems really worried as he basks in the sun down in Disney World.  Maybe he’s not concerned because he knows all the news is being sucked up by the stunning ruling on Obamacare or maybe because he’s confident Obama has his back.

Wolf in sheeps clothing, Chief Justice Roberts, forced to bear fangs by Kennedy vote

I predicted this in a previous post: “If this is true, Chief Justice Roberts is the one on the hot seat”.

“I have no idea of the validity of the information in this article but if true, Roberts is hoping Kennedy will side with the liberals on Obamacare so he doesn’t have to.

If it’s upheld 5-4 with Roberts being the swing vote then this information seems a whole lot more plausible!”

Roberts had to pay his dues, Roberts was appointed by Bush II, the son of NWO Bush I, son of NAZI conspirator Prescott Bush, so is it a big surprise that Roberts is owned by the R&R Luciferian bankster cartel, the New World Order elites?

Although he was the junior member of the Supreme Court, Bush made him Chief Justice…we’ve been screwed again!

Egypt and the rise of the Technocracy

I have a friend who is a systems analyst, Vicky Davis, who predicted that governments were headed this way: It's Not About Health Care - It's about the IT System and Technology

Egypt: Mohammed Morsi to select government of technocrats

Mohammed Morsi, the president-elect of Egypt, today pushed ahead with selecting a government of technocrats, as he drew up a battle plan to confront Egypt's economic and security issues.

Mr Morsi, Egypt's first civilian-elected president went straight to work after he was declared the election winner on Sunday, an aide said.

Following a riveting and deeply polarising contest against Ahmed Shafiq, the former premier of Hosni Mubarak, the Islamist must now try to live up to campaign pledges he undertook to gain the support of pro-democracy groups in defeating Shafiq.

The former senior member of the Muslim Brotherhood will try to select a government that will be inclusive of other political forces who reluctantly supported him against Shafiq.

Mr Morsi, who resigned from the Brotherhood after his win, also has to contend with a ruling military that will maintain broad powers even after it formally transfers control at the end of June.

A senior aide to the first Islamist president in the country's modern history said Morsi was conducting talks to appoint an "independent national figure" as his premier.

"Most of the cabinet will be technocrats," he added.

Selling out America: Destroying U.S. sovereignty via Agenda 21, Part 3

Selling out America: Destroying U.S. sovereignty via Agenda 21, Part 3

Jodi Fowler Huntsville Conservative Examiner

In Part 1 of “Selling out America: Destroying U.S. sovereignty via Agenda 21,” the discussion began with the recent gritty move of an Alabama governor to pass into state law rejection of the encroaching threat of the United Nations Agenda 21 and the covert expansion of goals used to impose invasive enactment towards citizens of a global world order. Protecting the property ownership rights of its citizens from U.N. subjugation, Alabama is the first state in the Union to enact this legislation.

Other state leaders from Kansas, Arizona, Tennessee, and New Hampshire are now questioning Agenda 21 and have enacted resolutions or are considering similar legislation condemning the underhanded U.N. techniques to adopt the expropriation of its agenda.

History of how U.N. global control enforcement has maintained a far reach since its radical ideological inceptions, global order advocates have used misleading soft language or code words such as “sustainable development,” “social justice,” “climate protection,” “green growth,” “sustainable rural communities,” the “redistribution of wealth,” and now “communitarianism,” to implement the governing philosophy of Agenda 21.

To achieve these goals, the U.N. created the use of inter-governmental methods led by the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI), aimed at dues-paying U.S. states, counties, communities, and remaining world countries by using monetary enticements and educational propaganda in promotion of its noxious end point.

Part 2 addresses supportive methods used by Presidents George H.W. Bush, William J. Clinton and George W. Bush to continue the promotion of Agenda 21 whether using a mixture of discreet or often obvious methods such as Executive Orders.

This third and final article will address one of the most, if not the most, controversial presidents to ever hold the highest office in America, Barack Hussein Obama.

President Barack Hussein Obama – 2009 to Present

In the nearly four years since taking office, the false rhetoric of “Hope” and “Change” that this charismatic orator promised in his many pre-election campaign speeches encompassed words hinging on a political masterpiece, using a deliberate and well-trained combination of words, stories, body language, facial expressions and gestures to subversively communicate with another person’s subconscious mind without them noticing, a method often referred to as conversational hypnosis.

Following Obama’s campaign, an analysis by John Hopkins University states, “Ideas such as hope and change are easily interpreted emotionally if the delivery is done well. From comments about how Obama came down to other peoples' level and videos demonstrating the effect Obama had on people, it is clear that the delivery of his ideology was effective.”

In 2008, America was facing an economic crisis which provided an opportunity for Obama to play on peoples’ emotions.

“During these times of crisis, many people feel overwhelmed by their problems and do not want to think about how to fix them. Instead, they want to put faith into a confident, charismatic leader."

Obama was elected by a wide margin over Senator John McCain thus beginning his steroid-like machination of “Change.”

As his presidency progressed, “Hope” became a forgotten mantra and “Change” took on the “less is more” connotation like none the American citizenry has before witnessed. Also, his frequently quoted claim of leading the country with “transparency” became lost in a cloud of mystery with the 44th President’s signing the first day after his term onset of Executive Order 13489, thus sealing his personal records from the public’s view. This move has since clouded his presidency with doubt regarding his eligibility as well as credibility.

While Barack Obama is failing as a leader in a variety of aspects ranging from the declining jobs economy, the exploding housing bubble and out-of-control debt, his continuing radical promotion of change strongly bears resemblance to the same goals of the United Nations Agenda 21, a little understood intent by the majority of the U.S. population.

Is Obama’s “Change” the proverbial icing on the cake of the end game of enacting Agenda 21?

Take for example the rhetorical use of “social justice” and the “redistribution of wealth.” How, thus far, have these terms affected the American economy? Kevin Collins of Western Journalism lists several truths revealing the pathetic results of implied social justice and the redistribution of wealth:

• A rise of the national debt of $5 trillion, more than 43 prior presidents combined.

• A rise in food stamps use from 32 million to over 46.4 million Americans.

• The rise of fuel costs averaging $4,155.00 per family in 2011 for gasoline alone.

• Twenty-two percent of American children living in poverty.

• Unemployment of eight percent or greater for Obama’s entire presidency.

• Forty-two percent of American workers living paycheck-to-paycheck.

• Fifty-three percent of college graduates under 25 years-old unemployed or underemployed.

• Monetization of 61 percent of our national debt via selling government bonds to other government agencies.

• American workers age 60 or older will work past retirement age of 65.

• Compared to 1985, a 2011 trade deficit with China was increased to 49,000 times larger.

• The national debt could not be repaid in less than 440,000 years starting now.

• Americans’ poverty numbers reached 2.6 million in 2010.

• National debt rising at a rate of $2 million every minute.

Obama’s successful passage of an unpopular socialist health care bill has little to do with overall health care and everything to do with federal government expansion and control.

Add to these atrocities the flagrancy of an extravagant in-your-face president who squanders lavish amounts of tax payer dollars on princely trips and who frequently hosts exorbitant White House parties all at Americans’ expense.

Are we facing the purposefully implemented demise of the middle class?

Almost immediately after taking office, Barack Obama began his rule by adding czars creating non-vetted posts, side-stepping Constitutional Congressional law, and aggressively using executive power to govern unilaterally. In order to ram through his agenda, he began seizing government expansion and control. Although he has enacted Executive Orders, many have the intent of taking domination of Americans’ freedoms echoing the ambitions of Agenda 21.

Obama has signed more than 125 Executive Orders since his beginning his presidency, and if one takes into account the amended Orders and revoked Executive Orders of former presidents, the number is higher.

Thus far, many of Obama’s Executive Orders infringe on the rights of Americans allowing huge government growth. His overreach is a usurpation of the foundations of the Founding Fathers when the U.S. Constitution was conceived and written.

For example, Laurie Roth of Renew America cited content of several of the worst of Obama’s Executive Orders to date:

• “The takeover of all modes of transportation and controls of highways and seaports.
• Seize and control of the communication media.
• The take over of all electrical power, gas, petroleum, fuels, and minerals.
• Mobilization of civilians into work brigades under government supervision.
• Government take over of all health education and welfare functions.
• Designation of the Postmaster General to operate national registration of all persons.
• Government takeover of all airports and aircraft, including commercial aircraft.
• Allowing the Housing and Finance Authority to relocate and establish new locations for populations.
• Government takeover of railroads, inland waterways and public storage facilities.
• Assigns emergency preparedness to federal departments and agencies, consolidating 21 operative Executive Orders issues over a 15-year period.
• Specification of the Office of Emergency Planning and giving authorization to put all Executive Orders into effect at times of increased international tensions and economic or financial crisis.
• Granting of authority to the DOJ to enforce the plans set out in Executive Orders to institute industrial support, to establish judicial and legislative liaison, to control all aliens, to operate penal and correctional institutions, and to advise and assist the President.
• Allow the Federal Emergency Preparedness Agency to develop plans to establish control over mechanisms of production and distribution of energy sources, wages, salaries, credit, and flow of money in U.S. financial institutions in any undefined national emergency. It also provides that when the president declares a state of emergency, Congress cannot review the action for six months.”

Is this the dictatorial totalitarianism following the edicts established by Agenda 21?

When Obama doesn’t get his way, he just sidesteps law via whatever suits his latest whim. Although Congressional branch members voted against passing the Dream Act, just last week he made the startling announcement that he is granting amnesty via Executive Order fiat to allow at least 800,000 illegal immigrants currently residing in the United States brought here by illegal family members. So much for the definition of ILLEGAL!

Pundit speculators call this move a disgusting reelection campaign ploy, once again focusing on his desire to continue ruling via political brandishing.

Of particular note, one of his most controversial moves, Executive Order 13575, established the White House Rural Council (WHRC) which is to “coordinate and increase the effectiveness of Federal engagement with rural stakeholders, including agricultural organizations, small businesses, education and training institutions, health care providers, telecommunications services providers, research and land grant institutions, law enforcement, state, local, and tribal governments, and nongovernmental organizations regarding the needs of rural America.”

“President Obama’s E.O. 13575 is designed to begin taking control over almost all aspects of the lives of 16% of the American people. Why didn’t we notice it? Weinergate. In the middle of the Anthony Weiner scandal, as the press and most of the American people were distracted,” Obama created the WHRC.

The Order uses Agenda 21 language to promote “sustainable development” and “communitarianism” and a plan to further circumvent Congress which has never approved Agenda 21’s doctrines and to implement a powerful land grab by government to “seize greater power over food, fiber and energy, items…key to human sustenance.”

The majority of the White House Rural Council will be headed by currently appointed cabinet department members as well as the FCC, the EPA, the Office of Management and Budget, the Council of Economic Advisors, the Domestic Policy Council, the Small Business Administration, the Council on Environmental Quality, and White House Office of Public Engagement and Intergovernmental Affairs, and the White House Office of Cabinet Affairs; and, other executive branch departments, agencies, and offices as the President or Secretary of Agriculture may, from time to time, designate.

Henry Lamb of Renew America writes, “The Obama administration has picked up where the Clinton administration left off, advancing the implementation of Agenda 21. The U.S. State Department has been preparing to support the U.N.’s effort to convert the non-binding Agenda 21, into a legally binding Covenant on Environment and Development, enforceable by the International Criminal Court.

“With the presidential campaign gaining more attention, it will be increasingly difficult to get elected officials, or any one else, to pay attention to what is happening at the international level. The Obama administration has already made commitments to the U.N. and will seek every effort to make good on as many of those commitments as possible---before the election.”

Hence, the aforementioned referral to an executive administration hell bent on ramming through, via every method possible, its radical progressive destruction of America’s sovereignty via Agenda 21. If Obama is not reelected, there is a stronger possibility in stopping his and the U.N.’s despicable, potentially calamitous power grab.

Barack Hussein Obama has done enough damage during his first term and must not be re-elected President of the United States of America for a second term. And, the United Nations, at all costs, must not be allowed by our federal leaders to continue its obsequious, deceitful and treacherous path toward the redistribution of wealth within our nation.

“There are more instances of the abridgement of the freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments of those in power than by violent and sudden usurpations.” ~ James Madison

The House oversight committee voted Wednesday to demand a broad audit of the Federal Reserve system by congressional investigators - a major move lawmakers said is designed to bring accountability to the murky workings of the independent board.

The bill was sponsored by Rep. Ron Paul, the Texas Republican who turned the push for an audit into a powerful campaign slogan and whose criticism of the Fed’s monetary policy drew hundreds of thousands of voters into the political process.

It passed by voice vote, signaling the growing sense among lawmakers that the time has come for a full review. Committee members said they hope for a vote in the full House next month, and the legislation has been sponsored by 263 members, virtually assuring its passage.

“Clearly the Fed must be made too big to fail, and too big to fail requires a considerable amount of oversight,” said Rep. Darrell E. Issa, California Republican and chairman of the committee.

Federal law right now specifically prohibits such a broad audit, and opponents fear undermining the independence of the Federal Reserve.

The bill would direct the Government Accountability Office to complete a broad audit that would presumably include a peek at the Fed’s decision-making and many of its lending policies.

The committee defeated an amendment sponsored by Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, Maryland Democrat, that would have prevented auditors from getting a look at internal board-discussion minutes.

“This whole idea about ‘Well we can’t touch the Fed‘ is baloney,” said Rep. Dennis J. Kucinich, Ohio Democrat. “We have to be able to have control over the Fed because it’s controlling every aspect of our economy.”

The Federal Reserve consists of a board of governors and 12 regional banks, which act as lenders of last resort to the country’s banking system.

Last year, a more limited audit by GAO found the Fed repeatedly invoked emergency authority to expand its lending during the Wall Street crisis in 2008 and 2009, including major loans to prop up the housing market.

The audit also found that the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, which had a major role in the lending, did not have sufficient controls to prevent conflicts of interest for its employees.

Mr. Paul has pursued an audit for years, and said the bill’s time has come.

“The Fed’s purchases of dubious assets from favored Wall Street institutions; its lending of hundreds of billions of dollars to foreign governments and central banks; and the prospect of further quantitative easing and European bailouts underscore the critical need for transparency,” he said in a statement.

If the bill clears the House it will still need a vote in the Senate - but Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Nevada Democrat, has spoken approvingly of an audit in the past.

Democrats avoid Obama’s nomination convention, Democrat campaign chief says stay away

List of Democrats Skipping the Party’s National Convention Continues to Grow

There may be some extra hotel space in Charlotte, N. C. come the beginning of September, as several Democratic elected officials have announced that they will not be attending the Democratic National Convention this year.ObamaAppleTree

Earlier today, Talking Points Memo reported that Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill will not be attending the convention, becoming the third Democratic senator, and eighth Democratic member of Congress, to opt out of the event.

Late Tuesday she tweeted, ” Whole lot of nothing over me campaigning w/Mo folks instead of going to convention w/party honchos. Bet POTUS agrees with my decision.”

Several of the elected officials who have decided to forgo the convention hail from places where Obama is unpopular; West Virginia’s Democratic House Rep. Nick Rahall, Sen. Joe Manchin and its governor, Earl Ray Tomblin, have all announced they’re not going. Obama’s low popularity in the state is perhaps best exemplified by the strong performance of prison inmate Keith Russell Judd in the state’s Democratic presidential primary. Other elected Democrats not going include Rep. Jim Matheson of Utah and Sen. Jon Tester of Montana.

McCaskill is in the same boat as her colleagues from West Virginia, Utah and Montana, in the sense that she hails from a state where Obama is unpopular- a Gallup poll from Janury, 2012 put his approval rating in the state at just 39 percent- and she faces a tough re-election campaign this cycle.

However, her decision to stay away is significant because she was an early endorser of Obama in 2008, and a big surrogate for his campaign. Obama narrowly lost Missouri in 2008– but by a margin of less than one percentage point– making it one of the closest states in the general election. ”You can’t underestimate the importance of Claire McCaskill to this campaign,” senior Obama campaign adviser Anita Dunn said at the time. This cycle, ABC News rates the state as solidly Republican.

Democrats are not alone, Republican elected officials have opted not to attend this year’s GOP convention in Tampa Bay, Fla. as well. Recently, Montana Rep. and GOP Senate nominee Denny Rehberg announced he would not be attending. Rehberg has been distancing himself to some degree from the Republican congress, he recently ran an ad in which he criticized Paul Ryan’s budget proposal.

Party leaders skipping their party’s conventions is not an entirely new phenomenon: Claire McCaskill has actually skipped her party’s convention before, in 2004. In 2008 several GOP senators facing re-election including Susan Collins of Maine skipped out on the festivities in Minnesota.

According to a joint report by software security firm McAfee and Guardian Analytics, more than 60 firms have suffered from what it has called an "insider level of understanding".

"The fraudsters' objective in these attacks is to siphon large amounts from high balance accounts, hence the name chosen for this research - Operation High Roller," the report said.

"If all of the attempted fraud campaigns were as successful as the Netherlands example we describe in this report, the total attempted fraud could be as high as 2bn euro (£1.6bn)."

The automated malicious software programme was discovered to use servers to process thousands of attempted thefts from both commercial firms and private individuals.

The stolen money was then sent to so-called mule accounts in caches of a few hundreds and 100,000 euro (£80,000) at a time.

Credit unions, large multinational banks and regional banks have all been attacked.

Sky News defence and security editor Sam Kiley said: "It does include British financial institutions and has jumped over to North America and South America.

"What they have done differently from routine attacks is that they have got into the bank servers and constructed software that is automated.

"It can get around some of the mechanisms that alert the banking system to abnormal activity."

The details of the global fraud come just a day after the MI5 boss warned of the new cyber security threat to UK business.

McAfee researchers have been able to track the global fraud, which still continues, across countries and continents.

"They have identified 60 different servers, many of them in Russia, and they have identified one alone that has been used to steal 60m euro," Kiley said.

"There are dozens of servers still grinding away at this fraud – in effect stealing money."

WOW! In Germany of all places, judges rule parents can be brought to court for circumcising children

When not performed out of medical necessity, circumcisions constitute a ‘severe and irreversible interference into physical integrity,’ Cologne judges rule

Parents having their sons circumcised can be brought before a judge for causing bodily injury, even if they did so for religious reasons, a regional court in Germany has ruled.

The recent landmark decision will likely draw the condemnation of Jewish and Muslim communities, although official representatives have refrained from commenting so far, saying they first want to study the reasons given for the judgment.

Following the judgment by the District Court of Cologne, neither the rights of parents nor the constitutional freedom of religion can justify interventions such as circumcision, according to Financial Times Deutschland, which first reported the story.

Jewish community officials in Cologne said they have yet to study the court decision but have already contacted the Central Council of Jews in Germany. “The Central Council will try immediately to receive a written version of the judgment. Only then will it be possible to comment,” a statement read. “We understand the disquiet and we noticed the numerous phone calls and emails of our community members. We will stay involved and keep you updated.”

University of Passau jurist Holm Putzke told the FTD the decision could have far-reaching ramifications.

“As opposed to many politicians, the court was not deterred by fears of being criticized for anti-Semitism or hostility toward religion,” he said. “This decision could not only influence future jurisdiction, it could also lead the relevant religions to change their attitude with respect to the fundamental nature of children’s rights.”

The case that prompted the ruling took place in Cologne, when a 4-year-old boy, circumcised by a Muslim doctor, began bleeding two days after the surgery and needed to be brought into the emergency room.

The state prosecutor’s office learned of the case and sued, leading the district court to rule that the circumcision was a “severe and irreversible interference into physical integrity.”

Today, there are about 200,000 Jews in Germany, about 5,000 of them in the western city of Cologne.

Legal experts told the paper they assume that other courts in Germany could deal with similar cases and that the question of religiously motivated circumcisions will end up in the country’s Supreme Court.
